Following the breach of patient confidentiality by the healthcare provider which I mentioned in my previous post, I wrote to the local manager. I wanted to resolve the issue quickly and quietly in a way which would not jeopardise people’s jobs or patient care.
Notes of counselling I received in 2012 after being bullied had been given to someone outside the healthcare industry. Until recently, I had not known that these notes existed as the counseller had told me at the time that she did not keep notes but carried the information in her head. In fact, the notes were very detailed. I do not feel this was an ethical approach towards someone who had been made vulnerable at the time. There were also further notes of later counselling. These were all passed to someone who has twice tried to cause me serious harm, as well as posting abuse about me on social media. The information contained in the notes has I believe subsequently been misrepresented and distorted.
After such a huge betrayal of trust on several levels, my aim was to deal with the matter as quickly as possibIe and put it behind me. I received three telephone calls and a letter from two organisations involved which unfortunately failed to be open and honest.
To my surprise, I subsequently received support from a person who could have just stood by and protected his own position, but instead was kind and decent enough to help. He has earned himself a lot of brownie points here!
I have also received support from the organisation I was formerly connected to and have to say that this and another recent show of support have started to change my attitude towards it.
Unfortunately, as I seem to be no further forward in achieving a resolution with the healthcare provider, it appears as though I will have to seek advice with a view to considering legal action. This could of course lead to unwelcome publicity and consequences for the healthcare provider, but I feel there are now few other options.
